Frequently asked questions

Is a bonus taxed at a special rate?

No. A bonus is added to your income and taxed at your normal rates. It can feel higher because it may push part of your income into a higher band.

Why was more tax taken from my bonus month?

National Insurance is worked out on each pay period, and PAYE tax spreads your allowances across the year. In a bonus month more income can fall above the monthly thresholds. Some of this can balance out over the year for tax, but NI is not recalculated annually.
